    A Symposium of Reading and Reflection Reading Day Celebration 2026

    The Department of Languages at Yeldo Mar Baselios College, in association with the Gregorian Library, hosted the Reading Day Celebration 2026 a thoughtful afternoon of readings, reflections, and conversation under the theme "Read. Reflect. Inspire." The event celebrated the transformative power of literature and honored reading as a discipline that cultivates attention, empathy, and civic imagination. Mr. Amal Chandran, Head of the Department of Languages and IQAC Coordinator, welcomed guests, students, and faculties .He highlighted how reading strengthens academic inquiry and personal growth alike, and thanked the Gregorian Library for its continued partnership in fostering a campus culture that values books as engines of thought and change. Chev. Prof. Baby M. Varghese, Chairman of Yeldo Mar Baselios College, delivered the presidential address. He spoke about the role of reading in shaping thoughtful leaders and compassionate citizens, and reaffirmed the college's support for initiatives that promote critical literacy and lifelong learning. The ceremony was honored by the presence of the chief guest, Sri Sooraj Ben, Indian Forest Service (IFS), Mannur, Muvattupuzha, Kerala, who secured All India Rank 1 in the UPSC IFS Examination (2020). Drawing from his personal and professional journey, Sri Ben reflected on how a habit of reading guided and sustained him through preparation for civil services and shaped his approach to public service. He shared anecdotes from his childhood reading and recommended several books that inspired his thinking and resilience. Sri Ben emphasized that reading is not merely the accumulation of information but a discipline of attention that opens us to perspectives beyond our immediate experience. He connected this practice to environmental stewardship, leadership, and community engagement arguing that the empathetic and reflective capacities cultivated by reading are essential for responsible governance and collective action. As a mark of appreciation, Chev. Prof. Baby M. Varghese presented a memento to Sri Sooraj Ben on behalf of Yeldo Mar Baselios College. The gesture acknowledged Sri Ben's contribution to the event and his role in exemplifying how intellectual curiosity and public service can converge to serve the common good. Prize Distribution and Student Achievements on reading celebration also served as an occasion to recognize student achievements across literary and language activities. The awards reflected excellence, creative expression, and sustained engagement with texts. The recipients were -Book Review (English): Ameeliya Freza, Second Year AGD, Book Review (Malayalam): Liya Hannan, Third Year Interior Design, English Recitation: Devika Dipu, Third Year Interior Design,Quiz Competition: Archana Vijayakumar, Third Year Multimedia. Best Reader of YMBC Anand (VFX batch 2022-25) & Ameeliya Freza, Second Year AGD. Mr. Anandhu Sudheer, Academic Head, shared his own reflections on the lifelong value of reading and encouraged students to read widely and critically. His personal anecdotes and practical advice made intellectual growth feel attainable and deeply relevant to students pursuing creative careers. Ms. Jasmin M.Α, Head of Interior Design and Mr. Andrew Samuel Kejin, Head of Fashion Design shared their taste of reading centers on a deep appreciation about books. They recommend regional authors to students, include Malayalam texts in reading lists, and host informal discussions that are both culturally rooted and creatively expansive. As the programme drew to a close, Ms. Merin Paulose, Program Coordinator, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks. She acknowledged the efforts of faculty, staff, student volunteers, and the Gregorian Library for making the event possible. Ms. Merin Paulose, Program coordinator extended gratitude to the participants and guests for their thoughtful contributions and urged the college community to carry forward the spirit of reading, keep reflecting, and continue inspiring one another. Thus the event underscored how books equip readers with the capacity to imagine other lives, challenge assumptions, and act with greater empathy. So our college reaffirmed its commitment to building learning environments that value curiosity, critical engagement, and creative expression qualities that remain essential in an increasingly complex world.
