Step into the realm of sustainable creativity with Yeldo Mar Baselios College of Media & Design's Department of Interior Design. We're proud to host "BAMBOO IN PRACTICE," an immersive Furniture Making Workshop exclusively for our Second Year students at the prestigious Haritham Art & Craft Center (Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Kerala, Wayanad) on February 26th & 27th, 2026. This hands-on atelier invites budding spatial artisans to master the art of bamboo craftsmanship, transforming renewable culms into functional yet sculptural furniture pieces that redefine biophilic design principles. In this intensive two-day program, students delve into parametric modeling of bamboo's anisotropic properties, exploring its superior tensile strength and natural flexibility for load-bearing applications in modular joinery and tensile structures. Under expert guidance from seasoned crafts masters, students were engaged in precision techniques like node splitting, lashing with natural fibers, and steam-bending to fabricate seating, multifunctional shelving units, and lightweight partition screens. Emphasizing cradle-to-cradle sustainability, the workshop integrates vernacular aesthetics with contemporary minimalism, and UV-resistant sealants to ensure longevity in high-traffic interiors while minimizing embodied carbon footprints. Beyond technical mastery, this workshop fostered a holistic approach to resilient interiors, aligning with global standards. Students experienced the prototype hybrid assemblages-blending bamboo's organic texture with recycled accents-to create space-defining elements that enhance acoustic performance, thermal regulation, and circadian rhythm support through diffused natural light interplay. This experiential pivot equips our future interior architects with industry-ready competencies in biomimicry, circular economy frameworks, and client-centric customization, bridging academic rigor with Wayanad's rich artisanal heritage.
