    Colours, Threads & Stories — Where Tradition Meets Art

    Yeldo Mar Baselios College’s Department of Fashion Design, in proud collaboration with Kochi Metro, presented “Colours, Threads & Stories,” a hand-embroidery exhibition and spooky-season kit event held at MG Road Metro Station on 31 July and 1 August, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Organized to coincide with World Embroidery Day, the exhibition brought together the delicate beauty of traditional needlework and contemporary creative sensibilities, transforming 48 embroidered hoops into a moving tapestry that celebrated both regional and global heritage. The exhibition featured a curated collection of traditional embroideries from across India and different countries, each hoop representing a unique cultural narrative. Visitors encountered the sober refinement of Kerala’s local motifs, the vibrant geometry of Indian tribal stitches, and the intricate floral and symbolic patterns found in international traditions. The selection showcased not only technical variety—chain, satin, mirrorwork, kantha, phulkari, and beyond—but also the deep stories woven into every stitch: rituals, domestic histories, seasonal celebrations, and personal memories preserved through textile craft. This event was the culmination of intensive work by second-year Fashion Design students at Yeldo Mar Baselios College. As part of their curriculum, 15–20 students volunteered to curate, stitch, and steward the exhibition. Their contributions went beyond creating the hoops: they researched regional techniques, prepared informative labels, and trained to lead engaging, educational conversations with visitors. On-site, these student volunteers explained the origin and relevance of each embroidery tradition, demonstrating how sustaining such crafts supports cultural continuity and offers pathways for creative innovation in contemporary fashion and design. “Colours, Threads & Stories” also invited visitors to watch live demonstrations and engage directly with makers. Audiences observed hands at work—threading needles, building motifs stitch by stitch—and gained an appreciation for the patience and precision required by traditional hand embroidery. Public response to the exhibition was overwhelmingly positive. Commuters, art lovers, and cultural tourists paused to admire the hoops, comment on the craftsmanship, and converse with the student curators. Many praised the exhibition’s thoughtful presentation and the students’ ability to convey both technical detail and heartfelt stories behind the work. Several visitors expressed surprise and delight at discovering lesser-known embroidery traditions and reported leaving inspired to learn basic stitches or support local artisans. By placing traditional embroidery within a vibrant, accessible public space, Yeldo Mar Baselios College and Kochi Metro created an event where every stitch told a story. “Colours, Threads & Stories” demonstrated how academic learning, community partnership, and creative practice can come together to celebrate and preserve textile heritage—ensuring that these fragile, beautiful traditions continue to be seen, learned, and loved by new generations.
