Yeldo Mar Baselios College (YMBC), in collaboration with its Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the Anti-Narcotic Cell, convened an impactful awareness programme on 30 June 2026 to observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event, held on campus, attracted a large and engaged audience of students, faculty, staff, and community members, reaffirming the college's commitment to public health, student welfare, and social responsibility. The programme opened with a warm welcome by the Amal Chandran, IQAC coordinator & Head of the department of Languages, who underscored the college's ongoing efforts to foster a safe and supportive learning environment. Emphasizing the devastating personal and social consequences of substance abuse. Our Principal Ms. Chinchu V Joy called upon all stakeholders-students, parents, educators, and local authorities to work together in prevention, early intervention, and rehabilitation. We were honoured to host Mr. Faisal MAK, Assistant Excise Inspector, as the chief resource person for the session. With his extensive field experience in narcotics enforcement and community outreach, Mr. Faisal delivered a comprehensive and compelling presentation that combined factual data, enforcement perspectives, and practical prevention strategies. His talk began with an overview of current national and regional trends in drug abuse, including emerging substances, modes of distribution, and the links between addiction and organized crime. He emphasized that while enforcement is critical, education and awareness are equally important in reducing demand and protecting vulnerable populations. Mr. Faisal's presentation stood out for its clarity and accessibility. He explained the physiological and psychological effects of commonly abused substances, debunked prevalent myths, and highlighted early warning signs that peers, family members, and educators should watch for. He also outlined the legal framework governing narcotics, explaining the role of excise and law enforcement agencies in curbing illicit trafficking while respecting civil rights. The programme incorporated interactive elements that increased engagement and practical learning. Students contributed to a question-and-answer session, where concerns ranged from peer pressure and online drug procurement to strategies for supporting recovering students. Mr. Faisal responded with empathetic, evidence-based advice and shared examples of successful community initiatives and rehabilitation pathways. To complement the talk, the Anti-Narcotic Cell distributed informative pamphlets summarizing signs of substance misuse, helpline numbers, and local treatment resources. students were encouraged to participate in future workshops, peer-education campaigns, and community outreach drives that the college.
