    The Director's Journey: From Struggle to Storytelling!

    The Department of Multimedia, in association with the Multimedia Students Association, organised the inauguration of the Multimedia Students Association Media Carnival on 15 September 2026. The event was inaugurated by Savin S.A., Writer and Director, whose presence added significance to the occasion and inspired the students to explore their creative potential in the field of multimedia and media production. Savin S.A, the writer-director behind the Malayalam blockbuster Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros, addressed the multimedia students in an intimate and inspiring interaction that traced his path from uncertainty to acclaim. He spoke candidly about the early days of his career-rejections, limited resources, and the constant pressure to prove himself in an industry dominated by stars and big budgets. Despite these challenges, he remained committed to telling stories rooted in friendship, youth culture, and real-life emotions, a vision that eventually found resonance with audiences across Kerala and beyond. He has been a long-time associate and collaborator of writer-producer Vipin Das, having also worked as an associate director on Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey (2022) and worked as the associate director in Vaazha (2024 - Part 1) but he stepped up as the main director for his feature directorial debut breakthrough came with Vaazha (2023), which established his voice as a director capable of capturing the energy and chaos of young adulthood with authenticity and humor. The sequel, Vaazha II, went on to become one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films in Kerala, overtaking several star-driven releases and proving that content and relatability could triumph over conventional marketing muscle. During the interaction with our students, he explained why he dedicated the credits of Vaazha II to his assistant directors. He acknowledged their invaluable contribution, emphasising that filmmaking is a collaborative process and that the patience, hard work, and creative support of assistant directors play a crucial role in bringing a film to life. Savin also shared his reaction to being announced as the director of Vaazha II. He described the moment as a mixture of happiness, excitement, gratitude, and responsibility. The opportunity was deeply meaningful to him, as it represented the recognition of years of effort and struggle. At the same time, he was aware of the expectations associated with directing a successful film and felt the responsibility to honour the trust placed in him. He spoke warmly about his experience working with newcomer actors, describing it as both challenging and rewarding. Their freshness, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn brought authenticity to the characters and created a positive working atmosphere on the set. He highlighted the importance of guiding new actors with patience while allowing them the freedom to discover their own interpretations of the roles. Despite the obstacles he encountered, Savin remained committed to telling stories rooted in friendship, youth culture, and genuine human emotions. His journey and experiences offered the students valuable insights into filmmaking, resilience, collaboration, and the courage to pursue. For the students of Yeldo Mar Baselios College, Savin's words carried more than motivational value they offered a practical roadmap for navigating the creative industries. He urged them to embrace failure as part of the learning process, to collaborate fearlessly, and to remain true to their unique perspectives rather than chasing trends. He encouraged them to document their own journeys and translate personal experiences into compelling narratives. He also highlighted the importance of technical mastery combined with emotional intelligence. In an era where digital tools are more accessible than ever, he reminded students that technology alone does not make a filmmaker-empathy, observation, and the ability to connect with people do. His own team, largely composed of newcomers and first-time collaborators, became a testament to the power of trust, shared vision, and collective effort. The interaction left a lasting impression on the multimedia cohort, many of whom described it as a turning point in how they view their future careers. Students expressed renewed confidence in pursuing independent projects, experimenting with formats, and building portfolios that reflect their individual voices. Savin's visit aligned perfectly with the department's mission to blend technical training with creative risk-taking, reinforcing the idea that innovation often emerges from constraint rather than comfort. As the Media Carnival unfolds, his presence sets a tone of ambition and authenticity for the days ahead. From workshops to screenings, the event now carries an added layer of inspiration -a reminder that every great director once stood where these students stand today, armed only with curiosity, courage, and a story to tell.
