    International Animation Day Reel Competition

The Department of Animation and Graphic Design and the Department of Animation and Visual Effects, Yeldo Mar Baselios College, organised an exciting International Animation Day Reel Competition on 28th October 2026 at the YMBC campus. The event was conducted to celebrate the art of animation and encourage students to transform their imagination into engaging visual stories. International Animation Day is observed on 28th October each year, commemorating the first public performance of projected moving images through Emile Reynaud's Theatre Optique in Paris in 1892. The competition provided a creative platform for students to explore different animation techniques and showcase their storytelling abilities. Participants were required to form teams of four members and create an engaging animation reel of 30 to 60 seconds based on a surprise topic revealed at the beginning of the competition. Students could choose from a range of animation styles, including Pixilation, Cut-out Animation, Claymation, Puppet Animation, and Sand Animation. This variety allowed teams to experiment with different materials, techniques, and visual approaches while bringing their creative ideas to life. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation, with a total of 25 teams comprising approximately 100 students taking part in the competition. The participants demonstrated remarkable teamwork, originality, technical skill, and time management as they conceptualised, designed, animated, and completed their reels within the given duration. The surprise topic added an element of excitement and challenged students to think quickly and creatively. As part of the competition, students published their creations as Instagram Reels and tagged or collaborated with the official YMBC page, @ymbc_mediacampus. The reels with the highest number of likes and shares were eligible to compete for exciting surprise cash prizes. This digital component encouraged students to present their work to a wider audience and understand the importance of social media in promoting creative content. The programme was successfully coordinated by staff coordinators Mr. Lorance E Solomon and Ms. Ani Antony, along with student coordinators Ms. Alshifa and Mr. Avinash. Their guidance and support ensured the smooth conduct of the event. The International Animation Day Reel Competition was a vibrant celebration of creativity, collaboration, and animation, reflecting the talent and enthusiasm of the students of Yeldo Mar Baselios College.
